CAT C11 Engines

CAT C11 Engines

The CAT C11 is a turbocharged and after-cooled diesel engine designed to run applications requiring between 242-336 bkW (325 bhp to 451 bhp). The Caterpillar C11 engine is a very versatile engine, thanks in large part to its ability to meet a wide range of emissions standards, including the China Stage II, EPA Tier 3 equivalent, and EU Stage IIIA equivalent emissions standards. The C11 is also available using U.S. EPA and EU Flexibility, and for other regulated and non-regulated areas.

Common CAT C11 Engine Problems & Failures

Below, you’ll find some of the most commonly experienced engine problems from customers inquiring about replacing their C11 CAT engines. Unfortunately, some of the failures listed here typically lead to complete engine replacement being the only option. However, if some of these issues are caught early on, most of the engine can be salvaged.

  • AERA Association MemberCamshaft Failure
  • Connecting Rod Failure
  • Cracked Cylinder Head
  • Overfueling
  • Lifter/Roller Failure
  • Lack Of Oil or Oil Pressure
  • Extreme Blow By
  • Dropped Valves
  • Crankshaft Failure
  • Scored Pistons and Liners
  • Spun Crankshaft Bearings

Caterpillar C11 Engine Replacement Options

When it comes to the health of your engine, there could be a collection of issues contributing to its poor performance. Worst case scenario, you could be left with your only option being to completely replace the engine. Less severe engine troubles may only require you to replace a few parts or components. Of course, many engines can continue to run “OK” for a number of years. These tired C11’s are typically the best refresh candidates. In the end, cost, time, and availability will ultimately determine your decision, which is exactly why we’ve spelled out the pros and cons of buying a new CAT C11 from the dealer below.

Remanufacturing Process

A remanufactured C11 long block from Big Bear Engine Company is a great replacement option for the customer who has experienced a catastrophic internal engine failure. But on top of that, it’s an especially beneficial option if that customer still has functional, reusable external components that can be swapped over from the original C11. Perhaps most importantly, long blocks are a sound alternative to buying new when you’re trying to reduce some of the costs associated with replacing an engine.

We constantly strive to maintain a professional level of service, whatever the mission. In the field of remanufacturing, we guarantee this level of quality is sustained by first performing a full core tear down, followed by the comprehensive cleaning, inspecting, and machining of your Caterpillar C11 engine. This same process is carried out on every engine we build.

We’ll note that all of our remanufactured CAT C11 long blocks are built with a combination of both reman and new parts. We do not recondition or refurbish old engine parts. Instead, we completely rebuild your old C11 back to OEM specs.

Thorough Cleaning

Vigilant cleaning is essential during any remanufacturing process. This is why we make a deliberate effort to remove any contaminations that could promote, catalyze or cause both early component failure or outright engine failure. This is done by completely stripping the C11 engine and then putting the block, head, rods, crankshaft, and camshaft through a chemical jet wash or hot tank.

Crankshaft

Before our quality control division inspects the finished product, the original crankshaft is precision machined to precise tolerances, is polished, and then gets magnafluxed.

Cylinder Head

The head is resurfaced to guarantee a proper sealing surface with the block, and a finish that’s consistent with the latest head gasket materials. Valve height is mic’d and each head is vacuum tested to assure correct valve seating.

Block

C11 blocks are examined for any cracks or other damage using magnetic particle. This ensures that even the smallest of imperfection is identified before the rest of the reman process commences. The cylinders are then bored, honed, and inspected to specific tolerances. Torque plate honing is performed on particular engines to eliminate the chances of cylinder distortion occurring after the head is installed and torqued to the block. This process removes a primary source of engine blow-by. Block surfaces are then machined and examined for proper finish.

Camshaft

Every camshaft is inspected and precisely machined to provide correct lift. All lobes are measured with a micrometer to make sure OEM tolerances are met.

Connecting Rods

Connecting rods are first cleaned, and then machined to OEM specifications before being honed to the standard diameter of original equipment (for even distribution of stress across the bearings). New bushings are fitted and machined in all bushed rods. Each rod is also carefully inspected for bend and/or twist.

New Parts

Great performance and dependability are what we strive for, and this is why all of our C11 Caterpillar long blocks receive a standard set of new parts such as pistons and rings, bearings, gaskets and seals, and liners. These new parts ensure optimal performance and reliability throughout the life of your engine. New parts are a combination of OEM and aftermarket, when available.

Remanufactured Engine Standards

To best define remanufacture would be to produce something that is as close to new as possible. In pursuit of this, every wearable part is routinely replaced. All C11 CAT engine core materials are thoroughly inspected and examined against original equipment specifications for correct dimensional tolerances. Replacement parts are either new or re-qualified. If new, those parts are made using the same production processes as the original equipment was. Testing is performed to manufacturer specifications and original production standards.
